“Barn Door”.

Peppa, our Blue Heeler, sleeps in the kitchen and with the gate closed she could be contained, but she figured out that she could jump over the gate and would then make herself comfortable on the couch. While it was still warm out we kept her on the back porch, she has a nice little bed back there and the cats to keep her company, but with the weather getting cold we needed to be able to keep her in the house. 

I had purchased a barn door track at the beginning of the summer and figured we could hang an old door from our house with the hardware. However, I knew that this was something I would not be able to do without my husband's assistance. I knew that we would need spacers (our trim on the existing door is obviously not flush with the wall) and I knew that my level of frustration would most likely be high with this project. 

Last weekend I was finally able to convince Shannon to put the door up for me, and let me tell you how happy I am with how it turned out. It is not perfect, I mean we do live in an old farmhouse where nothing is level, but it works so well with the space. It has kept Peppa in the kitchen these past couple of nights and it keeps the heat from the wood burner from the kitchen when we are not in there.

I would post the directions of how to do this, but I am not a fan of reiterating things that have already been said. If you order a kit to hang a barn door it will  come with directions, follow them. I will say that my husband was not impressed with the directions that came with our kit, but by using his head he was easily able to make them work.

If you are planning on hanging the door on top of existing molding and are not just hanging it on the wall, you will need to make (or find someone to make) your own spacers. Thankfully I have a husband who was able to make the spacers at his shop, he measured the distance between the molding and the wall and cut the spacers (it was a little less than an inch). You will get spacers with the kit, these are so that the track is spaced out from the wall and the door has enough room to slide. These spacers will not be enough if you need to take into consideration existing molding. 

I did buy a latch for the door, but I will not be using it and since the door we used has a metal piece attached about midway this will be the handle. 

Of course we had to talk to the 7 and 9 year old that live in the house with us and explain that this is a door that cannot be slammed open, not that any door should be slammed, but this one has glass. So far they have both been careful and hopefully this trend will continue.
