My little girl wanted a unicorn themed birthday party this year and she requested that the cake and cupcakes were rainbow colored. I have done rainbow colored cupcakes before so I knew that I could get that done, but I was not sure about how I was going to pull off the horn and ears for the unicorn. After some looking on Etsy and Amazon I found the perfect set, they are reusable and worked well even with the small cakes I made. The set I ordered also came with cupcake toppers and a Happy Birthday banner. If you are interested in ordering this set there is a link to the seller on Amazon. I also posted a link to the seller from where I got the plates and cups because all of the ones I found at stores were kind of gaudy.

I divided the batter into six bowls and then added my food coloring. My daughter was overseeing the process and made sure that I got the perfect shade of each color.
After you have put cupcake liners in the pan you will spoon out your batter; since you will only need to fill each space halfway only use a a small spoonful of each color. After you have added all of your colors bake according to the directions on the package.
I used two small spring-form pans (sprayed with a little oil) for my cakes, I find that getting the cake out of the pan is much easier with a spring-from than it is when using a regular cake pan. Layer the colors just like you did with the cupcakes until it is filled about halfway, then bake according to the package directions.
Once everything has cooled, slice the cakes in half so that you can have a layered cake (or leave them as they are if you do not want that extra frosting in the middle) you can frost your cupcakes and cake. I used 2 containers of store bought white icing, put it in my stand mixer with two packages of cream cheese, and blended until smooth. I iced the cakes, added sugar beads in one for the mane, and used pink frosting with the sugar beads as decoration in the other one. Make sure that you wait to put the horn on until just before you present the cake, it works well, but after a while it just fell over. The ears stayed in place with no problem.
