It is no secret that we are big sports fan in this house, and that come March we are all about the NCAA Basketball Tournament. Each year we put up a bracket that is made up for four posterboards and laminated, so that it can be reused year after year. My son, RJ, was asking us about the tournament all the way back in October, before the season even began, so when it was time to put the bracket up he was the one filling in the teams. He is the one who asks each morning after games have been played and who won so that he can update the bracket.
This year, RJ got it into his head that we should have a tournament for our favorite movies, and it was a great idea. We each chose 4 movies (my picks would have been different for a grown up movie bracket), so our bracket consisted of sixteen movies, and with that the viewing began.
I posted the updates of our winners on Facebook, and Shannon's and my friends started to get into it. 'Rad' and 'Napoleon Dynamite' were clear favorites for many, as was 'Elf' (Lily's favorite movie). We did encounter a few ties and those were broken with heated games of Rock, Paper, Scissors. One of the many funny quotes during the marathon came from RJ. While watching 'Napoleon Dynamite' RJ was very perplexed about why Napoleon would be riding his bike with his brother tagging along for the ride on his roller blades, "How do they not have cars? They look like freaks."
Okay, back to the tournament. 'Wall E' was the first to advance to the Elite 8 with a RPS win and Rad had a surprise win over 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'. Shannon on his win, "It was like a 16 seed beating a number 1 seed." Shannon redeemed himself the next day by swinging his vote for 'The Parent Trap' instead of voting for his choice 'Every Which Way But Loose', but it was still a tie since the kids voted for 'Loose'. Libby came away with the RPS win for 'The Parent Trap'; the original with Hayley Mills, of course. 'Jurassic Park' got Libby and RJ's votes, while 'Big Daddy' earned Shannon and Lily's. "Big Daddy' pulled out the win after a fierce round of RPS between RJ and Lily; alliances were made.
We opened up the voting in the Elite 8 to our friends on social media, and while we did not get as many votes as we wanted, we did have some help and our Final Four was: 'Wall E' vs 'Toy Story' and 'Elf' vs. 'Napoleon Dynamite'. I think that the match-ups were very even, the appeal to feelings with 'Wall E' and 'Toy Story' and the goofiness of the other two. Wall E and Elf were in the championship round, and it was a tough one with another game of RPS. RJ and Lily confidently stepped up, "Rock, paper, scissors, shoot." Two rocks. "Rock, paper, scissors, shoot." Two rocks again, tough competion. "Rock, paper, scissors, shoot." RJ threw paper and Lily threw Rock, Wall E was up by one. "Rock, paper, scissors, shoot." Two rocks again, it was like they were in each other's heads. "Rock, paper, scissors, shoot." RJ threw a rock and Lily threw paper, tie game! "Rock, paper, scissors, shoot." RJ....scissors and Lily...rock, 'Elf' for the win!!!!
This was such a fun thing to do with the kids and I am sure that we will do this again next year. I found a great site online where you can add your movies to the bracket and keep track as you go. Check out Bracket Cloud, I set up a free account and was able to input the movies quite easily. I am probably going to use this site for my PE classes when we do tournaments in class. We may have lots of tournaments in the Clem household after the success of the March Madness Movie Marathon; it was a definite win.
