A couple of years ago the Department of Transportation bought some property around us when they were building a new road. They also bought a small piece of our front yard. Since the road project is close to completion they will begin auctioning the excess property to those who are interested, and those who have access to the property will be given priority (we are told). Supposedly the land will be considerably less expensive since access is limited to only a few land owners, in this case access is us and our "neighbor" Mary. We have no idea what this means though so we do not know how much money we need to make this purchase. Plus, the idea of an auction is a bit intimidating.
My dream is to revitalize the property we have and bring it back to a functioning orchard. I want to be able to use our land as a place to purchase organic produce, for education, and respite. If we can purchase the field behind us we can use part of it as a place for the animals to graze and the majority of it as a small scale farm for organic produce.
I envision school groups visiting and learning about the respect that our animals and earth deserve. I imagine friends coming to visit with their children to pick apples and sit by the camp fire, roasting marshmallows and possibly partaking in a few swallows of homemade moonshine (not the kids!). I smile when I think about adding a few Alpacas to the herd of animals that we already have, and smile even bigger when I think about what my dad will say if we get Alpacas. I am losing my focus right now because Lily and R.J. will not stop chattering, seriously, non-stop chatter, but that is okay because they are actually behaving. I think about having my college friend, Kurt Laker, up to visit so he can share his bee keeping knowledge with me and we can have locally harvested honey. I look forward to my children raising animals and showing them in 4-H.
My heart warms thinking about all that I have in this house and all that it can be, and I want it to be amazing, I want it to be more, but I need help. I am not one to ask for help especially for this much help, but if you are so inclined or would like to pass along the information please do. This is my dream. It would be amazing and I would make it happen. It would not just be for my benefit, I want this to help my community and to give back.
